Could you imagine yourself suspended hundreds of feet in the air walking across a thin line? For many the experience would be terrifying, but for those who do highlining it is a thrilling and transcendent experience.

Highlining in Squamish

Highlining is similar to slacklining except it is done at high elevations, such as across peaks, canyons or buildings. Highlining is a passion of COAST Athletic Therapist Daniela Hoolaeff. Here is her story of how she got into this unique sport and how it has shaped her practice.

How did you first get introduced to highlining?

I was first introduced to slacklining while travelling in Ghana. I attempted to walk across a 2-inch line strung between two palm trees, which ended with me flat on my back in the sand (not very graceful). A year later, I picked up my own slackline and began enjoying the process of learning new balance skills. After another two years of slacklining mostly solo (a great pastime through studying and covid), I met the Vancouver Island Slackline Community, and I was hooked. The transition to highlining opened me up to learning about gear, how to rig, and how to walk in stunning locations. The scene is quite spectacular here in Vancouver and Squamish. I’m grateful to be a part of the community and to have access to so many great spots!

How has it shaped your practice as an Athletic Therapist?

In terms of practicing Athletic Therapy, highlining has had two notable impacts:

First, it introduced me to the world of adventure sports. This has allowed me to thoroughly understand the patterns between functional movements in the outdoor and clinical settings. In turn, it strengthened my ability to tailor rehabilitation to specific sports (whether that be highlining, climbing, hiking/backpacking, and even paragliding, etc.)

Secondly, it has inspired me to dive into the physiology and motor control of balance and stability. This is fascinating in both the world of performance and when working with older adults populations to prevent falls, for example.

What do you love most about the sport?

It’s tough to pick just one aspect of highlining that I love most, as it is very multi-faceted, but if I had to narrow it down, I would say:

  1. The community. The stoke, care, support, and skill of the highliners is unmatched. I’m often left feeling fulfilled and inspired.

  2. The feeling of experiencing a space you otherwise wouldn’t. It brings you innately within the moment, effortlessly. And on top of that, it is so rewarding to push yourself both physically and mentally, to overcome fears and discomforts, and to achieve this beautiful sense of contentment and ease.

In summary, l always embrace my time on a line & the people I share these experiences with.
