Stress is a growing issue in today’s society. Not only is it coming from more traditional sources of stressors such as jobs, health and finances, but now we are bombarded with stimulation and information overload.
Unfortunately, stress can have a significant impact on your mental and physical health.
So what can you do about it?
Here are our tips to help manage the stress in your life.
Why Is Too Much Stress Bad?
Daily stress is inevitable, but sometimes it's not always a bad thing. Sometimes stress can be a great motivator, promoting self-improvement and driving achievements. However, when there is too much stress, it can have a significant negative impact on our health, happiness and overall well being.
Studies have shown that stress can cause a myriad of physical health problems such as insomnia, migraines, heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke to name a few. Not to mention the mental health side effects such as depression.
So how can you reduce stress in your life?
Exercise
Exercise is a great way to blow off some steam and it doesn’t have to be an intense workout. Just going for a walk can help promote the release of feel good hormones and suppress feelings of stress and anxiety. It also gives your mind an opportunity to wander, which can offer clarity and relieve anxiety.
Deep Breathing
When you are stressed our breath becomes shallow and more rapid. However, by taking deep slow breaths, you are able to help relax your body by slowing down your thoughts, heart rate and nervous system. This allows your body and mind to release tension and relax.
Laugh With Friends
Laughing is one of the best ways to combat stress. Firstly and most importantly it makes you feel happy, especially when you are laughing with friends and family. Laughing also reduces tension in your body, as well as increases the release of endorphins.
Self-Care
Making a little bit of time for yourself is always a good thing. It can be taking some extra time in the morning while you enjoy your coffee, a leisurely lunch date with a friend or a relaxing massage to reduce stress. These moments spent in the slow lane can help you to recharge and better manage the stress in your life.
