Transitions

When was the last time you had to go through a change that felt really hard? Some of life’s transitions could be:

  • a new job

  • moving

  • a breakup

  • retirement

Transitions can be some of life’s most stressful events. The death of a loved one or a divorce can be very disorienting and we can struggle to find ways to cope with the pain and sense of disorientation. And yet, as a society, we don’t really talk about it.

When we talk about transitions, we talk about what we are moving towards or what we get to leave behind but what about that space in between?  From the old to the new, from the difficult to the exciting or even from the known to the unknown. This in-between space can rid us with anxiety and fear halting us from taking leaps of faith or even calculated jumps.

So how do athletes do it? I always wondered about this. Professional athletes work their whole lives to accomplish their dreams – they win gold medals and they become our heroes. We admire their dedication, discipline and integrity towards their dreams but how do they go from ‘superhero’ to something entirely different?

A Conversation: Life Transitions

COAST is honoured to host a speaker series featuring Patrick Chan and Christine Nesbitt. These two iconic Canadian olympic gold medalists are willing to get raw and share with us what it takes for them to gracefully or not so gracefully to transition from the demanding world of professional athleticism to retirement.

Please join us on Thursday,  March 12, 2019 at 7pm. The event is a by donation event with proceeds benefiting Right to Play.
