At COAST, when it comes to rehabilitation, educating our clients is our top priority and that is especially important with the treatment of concussions.

A Physiotherapist can help safely and effectively treat concussions. They can also relieve any related symptoms with manual therapy and specific exercises, as well as determine the need for additional investigations and help navigate the healthcare system.

Manual Therapy and Dry Needling

When you suffer a concussion, the muscles in your head, neck, upper back and shoulders become tight as a result of any excessive protective muscle tone which will limit mobility and can contribute to headaches and nausea.  The goal of manual therapy and/or dry needling as a treatment is to relieve that tension and return the relationship between the head, neck, upper back and shoulders to normal.

Exercise Rehabilitation

We have already discussed how early onset of sub-threshold exercise under the close guidance of a trained health care provider such as an Athletic Therapist can help improve recovery times.

Learn more about how sub-threshold exercise can help improve post concussion recovery.

Often if post concussion symptoms do not subside on their own, a physiotherapist can recommend specific balance and vision therapy exercises in order to return to normal function.

Concussion patients often experience sensory overload as a result of the brain's inability to filter irrelevant or unnecessary sensory. Therefore, a Physiotherapist will work one-on-one with clients to make recommendations and help reduce the severity of these symptoms.
