Many of us have had a massage before, but not all of us have had a massage with a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT). Similar to a Physiotherapist, a RMT is a regulated health care professional. RMTs are extensively trained in manual therapy to treat and prevent injuries, pain and physical disorders related to ligaments, tendons, connective tissue, muscles, blood vessels, organs and other soft tissues.
Thinking about booking a massage with a Registered Massage Therapist for the first time?
Here’s an overview of some of the treatment techniques used by an RMT demonstrated by COAST RMT Dion D’Mello.
Dynamic Release Therapy
Dynamic Release Therapy can help with the treatment and healing of soft tissue injuries by locating and releasing adhesions that have formed in the tissue. These adhesions can lead to mobility restrictions and pain. It is performed by applying tension to a shortened muscle which is gradually lengthened.
Transverse Friction Massage
Transverse Friction Massage or Cross Friction is a massage technique that is performed on tendons and ligaments. It is done by applying a friction massage across the fibers of the tissue to displace inflammation such as from tendonitis. Cross Friction massage can help to reduce inflammation, increase circulation and improve range of motion. It is effective at reducing the formation of scar tissue, specifically post surgical scar tissue.
Trigger Point Therapy
Trigger Point Therapy helps to relieve pain and tension by applying pressure to sensitive trigger points found in the muscles and fascia tissue. The compression of the tissue causes the area to relax and relieve tension. Oftentimes these trigger points refer to pain in other areas of the body and can be the cause of mobility issues. These areas of sensitivity can be related to an injury or caused by weak or overused muscles.
Whether it is a sports injury, a chronic injury or a lifetime of poor posture, treatment from a RMT can help relieve pain and discomfort as well as assist in the rehabilitation process.
