Manual Therapy is commonly used by rehabilitation specialists, such as Physiotherapists, Chiropractors and Athletic Therapists. It has proven to be one of the most effective ways for treating injuries related to the musculoskeletal system. Manual therapy can help treat a wide range of issues such as sports related injuries, chronic pain, movement and mobility limitations, and can even help with the healing of a broken bone.

What is Manual Therapy?

Manual Therapy is a treatment technique in which the practitioner uses their hands as opposed to relying on a machine. It is used to affect change in people’s tissue. This can be done through techniques such as:

  1. Myofascial Release - releases adhesions and restores gliding motion to the underlying fascia tissues.

  2. Joint Mobilization - passive movement to joints to restore movement and function.

  3. Trigger Point Therapy - pressure applied to a tender area, which often refers pain elsewhere. Can help to relieve ongoing pain and muscle spasms.

How Does Manual Therapy Help Heal Your Injury?

Manual therapy is very effective at reducing pain, restoring and improving mobility and improving function to the injured area. It helps to heal injuries in several ways:

  1. It increases blood flow to the injury, which carries oxygen and nutrients to the injured area of the body.

  2. Reduces tissue stiffness by applying pressure to help lengthen and stretch the muscles.

  3. Nervous system perception of pain, so it helps to reduce pain sensitivity in the area.

Manual Therapy isn’t just for injuries, it can also be used to help prevent injuries, by treating potential issues before they become a full blown injury.
