Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a relatively common condition that causes weak and brittle bones. Although there is no cure, there are some treatments to help strengthen your bones. One form of treatment that has proven to be effective is a therapeutic weight-bearing exercise program prescribed by a Physiotherapist, Athletic Therapist or Kinesiologist.

Bone density is developed throughout the early years of a person’s life until their late twenties. As you age, you gradually begin to lose your bone density.

Developing and maintaining bone density throughout your life can be dependent on a number of factors. A good diet, which includes getting enough calcium as well as avoiding inflammatory and highly acidic foods, especially if you have broken a bone or are pregnant/breastfeeding.

Osteoporosis and Exercise

It is also important to do regular weight-bearing exercise such as walking, hiking or running. Doing exercises on your feet builds strong muscles and bones because you are working against gravity. As a result, your muscles and bones react to the weight and become stronger. Resistance exercises, which are exercises that work against a load that resists your movement, can also help build bone strength.

If you have been diagnosed with Osteoporosis, you can help prevent further bone loss by incorporating weight bearing and resistance training into your treatment. By working with a Physiotherapist, Athletic Therapist or Kinesiologist, they can prescribe safe and effective exercises based on your individual needs and fitness level. They will also advise you on certain activities and movements you should avoid to decrease risk of injury. Additionally, certain exercises can be added to your program to improve balance. Better balance will help prevent falls, which is more common as you age and is particularly serious for individuals with Osteoporosis.
